Migration Profiles
Support the development or updating of national Migration Profiles
The project has completed (in collaboration with the respective national structures for coordinating migration management) the process of developing the national migration profiles of Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Benin, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, and Sierra Leone. A support of EUR 10,000 was provided to IOM Ghana GIMMA project to support the Ghana migration profile. An initial assessment of the national structures for managing migration data was carried out between September and October 2016 for all countries.
The development of the migration profiles is harmonized and follows the general framework of the IOM guidelines on the development of the Migration Profiles. This methodology was also adopted by ECOWAS within its guidelines on migration data collection and management.
Build the capacities of key national institutions in ECOWAS Member States in evidence-based migration policy formulation
On 16-19 April 2018, the program supported a Capacity Building Workshop Labour Migration Policy held in Mankessim, Ghana. The training was attended by representatives from Ministry of Labour and Employment (MERL), Employee Association, Trade Union Congress, Ministry of Justice, Ghana Immigration Service, National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Social Services, Ghana Immigration Service, Police, Centre for Migration Studies. The labour migration policy for Ghana draws from the national migration policy which was adopted in 2016, which was developed to provide guidelines for migration governance in the country. The policy outlined broad policy objectives and strategies for managing migration and recommended the formulation of sectorial policies to handle specific migration-related issues.
Between the 2nd and 4th May 2018 the project supported Guinee Conakry through a tailored training on migration policy that saw the participation of 32 representatives of stakeholders intervening on migration. The training was moderated by ECOWAS, IOM and ILO trainers and provided the regional policy perspective on the legal framework, Migration and Development, Labour Migration, Free Movement, Protection and Mixed Migration. The training included also a session on the framework of the future national policy with the presentation and validation of the methodology and calendar of implementation. It is planned that during the second semester of 2018 training on migration policy will be delivered also in Benin and Togo in view of supporting the said countries in the process of elaboration of their national document
